N.C. 4-H Game of Drones – 2024

2nd Annual Pilot Challenge & See Who will be crowned “Ruler of the Earth and Sky”?

The Game of Drones is a new 4-H competition hosted by the 4-H STEM team at

North Carolina A&T State University and STEMerald City LLC. 

The competition is scheduled for April 27th, 2024 on the campus of NC A&T State University in Greensboro, NC.

Who? First Come, First Serve for Middle & High School Student Teams

Teams consist of 3 members, up to 2 alternates, 1 coach & must include either all middle or all high school students

Number of Teams are limited to 7 High School & 8 Middle School Teams

Learning Objectives:

  •          coding autonomous flights
  •          basic maneuvers using the aerial and land-based drones

Program Materials & Training:  Each team coach will receive materials needed to help prepare their team for competition, including Tello Drone, DataBot, enrichment activities and monthly challenges to work through on their own, regional and one-on-one training with the game masters, as well as a practice competition before the big day. The materials will be on loan to the team and should be returned to Dr. Terry in the same condition in which it was received. We understand that things happen, but drones and DataBots that are returned broken or damaged will have to be replaced by the coach. Each team will need to have their own laptop for practice, but a laptop will be provided for the competition. A Google Drive folder of activities and lessons to work through will be provided for teams to practice and gain coding and flight experience.

Where? Regional training locations will be determined once the teams have been selected.

Coaches do not need prior coding experience, but the experience will be helpful if the entire team is new to coding. Coaches will be responsible for meeting with the team to practice and for maintaining all program materials.

 

Program Materials

Each team coach will receive materials needed to help prepare their team for competition. The materials will be on loan to the team and should be returned to Dr. Terry in the same condition in which it was received. We understand that things happen, but drones and DataBots that are returned broken or damaged will have to be replaced by the coach. Each team will need to have their own laptop for practice, but a laptop will be provided for the competition. A Google Drive folder of activities and lessons to work through will be provided for teams to practice and gain coding and flight experience. A monthly challenge will be provided to help teams organize their practice sessions. Teams will also be able to sign up for one-on-one coaching in January for a session in February with the game master. Individual coaching sessions will be an hour long for each team.

Registration

Registration can be completed by scanning the QR code below between now and December 1st. The registration fee is $100 per team. Registration fees will be used to cover meals and awards for teams during the 2 in-person events. For this year, we will select 15 teams to compete. Teams will be notified via email by December 1st. Registration fees will be due by January 31, 2024.

Pending 1st come, 1st serve Jan sign up, each team has opportunity to for 1 hour time block to ask Game Master questions.

One-on-One Coaching Sessions (Each team will be allowed 1-hour time blocks. Sign up Sheet will be available in January)

March 9th and 16th, 2024

Regional mock competition and group coaching session (Location TBD once teams are selected – Mandatory attendance at one session or the other)
